Reman-Engine.com Core Charge & Core Return Policy

  • Effective as of June 10 2025
  • Failure to return the core will result in your warranty being suspended.
  • Cores returned after 30 days will decrease the warranty to 3 years and only 50% of the core value will be refunded.
  • Core Defined (Automotive Remanufacturing)

  • Think of a core like the propane tank you swap at a hardware store: you pay for the full cylinder plus a deposit on the steel shell, use the gas, then bring back the empty tank. Hand over a refillable shell in acceptable shape and you get your deposit back (or a discounted refill), letting the supplier clean, refill, and recirculate that same sturdy cylinder instead of forging a brand-new one every time.
  • Key IdeaWhat It Means in Practice
Like-for-Like UnitThe returned part must be the same model (casting, displacement, configuration) as the remanufactured one you purchased.
Rebuildable ConditionInternals are intact and repairable—no holes in the block, no shattered heads, no missing crank, etc.
Complete AssemblyIn engine terms, a long block: block, heads, crank, rods, pistons, cam/timing components. Accessories (alternator, starter, manifolds) can be removed.
Fluid-Drained & CratedOil and coolant are drained, major openings capped, and the unit is secured in the original shipping crate for safe return.
  • Why Cores Matter

    • Supply Chain: Returned cores provide the raw castings remanufacturers need to rebuild inventory.
    • Cost Control: A predictable stream of rebuildable cores keeps reman prices far below the cost of brand-new OE units.
    • Sustainability: Remanufacturing extends the life of heavy cast-iron and aluminum components, dramatically reducing landfill waste and energy consumption.
  • Acceptable vs. Unacceptable Cores (Engines)

  • AcceptableUnacceptable
Minor surface rust, worn bearings, rebuildable cylinder wearCracked block or head, broken connecting rods through the block
Spun main/rod bearings (repairable)Fire damage, molten or collapsed combustion chambers
Missing accessories onlyInternals removed or “gutted” short block
  • Bottom line: A core is your old, rebuildable engine (or transmission, alternator, etc.) that you return for a refund of the core charge. Meeting the seller’s condition and timing guidelines ensures you get your deposit back while helping keep remanufacturing economical and eco-friendly.
  • What Is a Core Charge?

  • A core charge (sometimes called a core deposit or core fee) is a temporary, refundable amount added to the purchase price of a remanufactured or rebuilt auto part—such as an engine, transmission, alternator, or starter. Think of it as a recycling deposit:
  • AspectHow it works
PurposeEncourages customers to return their worn-out “core” so the part can be remanufactured, reducing waste and keeping inventory flowing.
When It’s PaidIn many cases it is collected upfront at checkout along with the part’s price and any shipping costs.
How to Get It BackSend your used unit (the core) back to the seller within the stated return window, meeting their condition guidelines (e.g., same model, no catastrophic damage, fluids drained, shipped in the provided crate).
Refund MethodOnce the core passes inspection, the seller credits the exact core charge back to your original payment method—usually within a few business days.
Partial or No RefundIf the core is missing major components, cracked beyond repair, or arrives late, the refund may be reduced or denied.
  • Why Do Core Charges Exist?

    • Sustainability – Remanufacturing keeps usable castings and metal out of landfills and saves the energy and raw materials required to build a brand-new unit.
    • Cost Control – Returned cores give remanufacturers a supply of rebuildable parts, allowing them to keep retail prices lower.
    • Industry Standardization – Much like a propane tank exchange, core charges ensure consistent returns so the remanufacturing cycle isn’t disrupted.
  • In short, a core charge is not an extra fee—it’s a refundable deposit that motivates you to return your old part, helping both your wallet and the environment.
  • 1. Purpose of a Core Charge

  • A core is your used engine that has to be shipped back to get remanufactured. We add a refundable core charge to every remanufactured engine purchase to ensure the old unit is returned. Returning a rebuildable core keeps prices low, supports sustainability, and guarantees continued inventory.
  • 2. Eligibility & Core Condition Requirements

  • To receive a full refund:
    • Like-for-Like: The Returned core must be the same make, model, displacement, and casting as the remanufactured engine sold.
    • Complete Assembly: Core must be long-block complete (block, heads, crank, cam, rods, pistons, timing components).
    • No Catastrophic Damage:
      • No holes or cracks in the block or heads
      • No broken or missing major components (crank, rods, head, cam).
    • No Disassembly Beyond Accessories: Accessories may be removed, but internals must remain intact.
    • Fluid Drained & Cleaned: Oil and coolant must be fully drained; excessive sludge or corrosion may reduce credit.
    • Returned in Original Crate: Use the shipping container provided with your reman engine to protect the core in transit.
    • Parts shipped outside of the continental United States require Core Charge to be paid up front.
  • Units failing any requirement may receive a partial refund or be rejected entirely.
